Terry Carpernter, founder of Terrytown, bought what seemed to be worthless river-bottom land between Scottsbluff and Gering and promptly set about making "improvements."
One of the first things he did was to set up a brick factory. To get sand and gravel for making bricks and blocks, he used what was available. The hole that remained promptly filled with water and is now known as "Terry's Lake."
Sand that was not suitable for bricks was used for fill in the low-land. 48 apartments were then constructed from the bricks.
Terry's Lake offers great fishing. Stocked with trout, fishermen can also hook perch, catfish and even some northern pike.
Although very tempting, only the fish are allowed to swim in Terry's Lake. The lake's bottom is shallow for approximately 10 to 15 feet, then drops off to an estimated 30 to 50 feet in depth.
Another hazard is the winter ice. Anyone attemping to walk on the ice runs a high risk of falling through into the frigid water. "If someone is out in the middle and the ice cracks, they might fall through and no one will ever notice what happened" said Terrytown Mayor Kent Greenwalt.
